Wonderful!

This was beautifully presented. The interviews were insightful and compelling and the visual style really adds to the intimate feeling of the film. I enjoyed this very much.

Question for the filmmaker

Can I ask--Chelsea, I assume you've kept a paper journal as well--what inspired you to start? How does paper-journal writing inform your film work, and the organic techniques you use to such great effect? What kind of camera did you use to shoot these interviews? It has a really unusual and cool color saturation "look".

Answers from the filmmaker

I used a Mattel Vidster to shoot this short film. It's the closest contemporary equivalent to the PXL2000, in that it was intended for (and rejected by!) children, and its primitive image qualities make it a desirable tool for experimental filmmakers everywhere. This was my first time shooting with the Vidster, and I had initially intended "Lock & Key" as an experiment for shooting with it.

After several false starts as a kid, I started paper-journalling in earnest when I was in my mid-20s. I had attempted THE ARTIST'S WAY and the only thing that stuck with me was the "morning pages" -- writing three pages longhand. My own journal serves as a brain dump. Sometimes it's therapy and venting about how badly my day is going. Other days I use it to explore a creative idea and try to figure out how to tell a story or portray a character.

I'd heard about the Vidster--and as a Fisher-Price fan I'm especially fond of the PXL camera. Digital video can seem so sterile--but this feels very warm and handmade. I think it was a great creative choice.

That freedom to vent is one of the best things about journal writing. I also like being able to look back at various points in my life and get a different perspective on who I was and decisions I've made--but, it's sometimes hard not to cringe at some of my youthful mistakes and tantrums. :)

Interesting thoughts on an engaging topic

beautiful work

this is a lovely examination of an age-old art.

Wonderful!

This is really imaginative and unique, dealing with something so mysterious yet common to many many people, for very different reasons. I love it!

Really well done!

This obviously took a lot of work and creativity. Excellent!

Fantastic!

Many of the videos submitted are interesting, but this one is most definitely the most creative; the use of old and new footage and the seemingly vast differences between the three subjects is compelling and fun. Loves it!

Sweet Piece

Lovely piece -- like the effects, and the drop-ins of stock and other footage.

"Lock and Key"

Thanks very much for this!

Interesting

I liked the point of view on this. Wish I kept up my journal from high school. I miss it. I still go back and re-read passages so many years later.

You got me thinking!

Nicely done

I really enjoyed this and your perspective. Very well done - deserves to be seen by a wider audience.

So cool!

This was really cool - with all the electronic journals around, it's great to see that people still take the time to write things down. I used to have a journal, but I fell for the allure of the blogs. Good work!

Lock and Key

Well done! Great clips, esp.

I do regret not having kept a

I do regret not having kept a pregnancy journal for Sophia to have when she's older. I have a hard-drive full of emails I sent to other people while I was pregnant, but that's hardly the same thing as a tangible, physical, paper journal.

Lock & Key

V. Well Done ! Like the mixed media movie clips.

Great job! I like how all

Great job! I like how all three women have varying reasons and perspectives for keeping a journal, but how it's still incredibly important for all of them.

I liked this a lot!

We see a LOT of documentaries in this household and I think this one is as good or better than many of the shorts selected for HSDFI. Really good work!

I loved the emphasis put on

I loved the emphasis put on how diaries can contribute and enhance to creative ideas. Also Kelly Dumar is a fantastic writer, so any suggestions about writing that she has must be true. Also the editing was done very well and consistent.

Nifty and deep!

The speakers are engaging, and I enjoy the look of the picture. The editing really does make it seem like these women are in conversation with each other, and with the viewer.

For such a short film I found it unexpectedly moving. I've gotten a lot of good out of my community of woman friends, and this film reminded me of that.

cool

very nice! I am a big fan of Chelsea Spear's work.

Very easy to relate to -- love the old footage mixed in.
Love the OCD story at the beginning!

I love it

I really like hearing Chelsea's voice in the film. It really speaks to the subjectivity of all observation and reflection. I also like the footage. I think the somewhat-abstract close-ups really tie the intimate themes of the film together strongly with what the women are saying.

Lock and Key

Wonderful piece and loved the title Lock and Key.

(Title reminded me of the thrill of purchasing the first diary. The thin, shiny red ribbon tightly tied to two small keys ready to unlock or lock the pages that hold life's moments.)

The images of old to new added yet didn't take away from the flow of the piece. Just as the journal/diary is about the written word,I thought the use of audio was powerful.

A precious gift written during pregnancy, creative discovery of self, or just simple thoughts ... each individual's use of pen/paper, a lost art, reflecting on life. This was so well put together. Thank you!!!

Lock and Key

Well presented and compelling piece. I enjoyed the subject, pacing, the narrative and the use of old film. I predict that this director is going to go places. Well done.

"I wrote, and it was like a

"I wrote, and it was like a drug." A lovely evocation of the commonalities between journalers. Great use of old footage, too.

Great film!

I really enjoyed this short. I've kept my own handwritten journal for many years and this film really captures the intimate, personal nature of journal writing. I also love the look and feel of the short--I think it does a great job at reflecting and capturing the personal, handmade feel of journal writing, and the lives of the writers. Excellent work.

Your journalling habits

Caitie, it's so wonderful to hear such comments from you. You maintain journals on social-networking sites...what need does keeping a paper journal fill that keeping a blog does not?

KINO

It's an interesting question

It's an interesting question and I think their functions sometimes overlap, but on a basic level I think the paper journal is more for me to keep track of my own life--dates, places, people, events--and, more importantly, a safe space for me to confront my failings and fears, deal with emotions I'd be too embarrassed to share with others.

Oh, and--sorry, clicked

Oh, and--sorry, clicked "reply" too fast there. The public/online journal is a whole different animal in that (at least more often) I'm writing to reach an audience--to make friends, to communicate with people I care about and commiserate about the events of our lives. And, as a professional writer, I also use it as a sandbox to try out ideas and techniques, work on structure and phrasing, try out jokes, etc. Sadly the stuff in my paper journal is rarely funny. Except possibly in a darkly ironic way. :)

Bravo!

A beautiful piece. I love the use of archival footage with the interviews.

Well done!

Excellent!

There's such a move toward electronic journaling, it's fascinating to see why people still keep paper journals. The film itself kept my attention, and was cleverly edited. Well done!

Yay!

Journals are neat. Movies are neat. Finally, someone's combined the two!

I read somewhere that Aaron Sorkin from "The West Wing" was hired to write a movie about Facebook. So maybe your thesis will require some revision, but for the moment, in this case only, I think you're on the right track. :-)

Two great tastes that taste great together!

I love this

As a fellow female journal keeper (I still have my diaries from childhood and teendom), this really speaks to me. The mix of current and archival footage addresses the nature of how this practice might be seen as archaic in a world of blogging, but is actually quite meaningful and timeless.

Compelling and beautiful -

Compelling and beautiful - the insight into the process that these women go through and the reasons why they journal are universal themes that everyone can identify with. I found myself immersed in each of their stories – please, share this far and wide!

Excellent work!

These interviews were so sweet and honest, and the frustration, obsession, and ardor that accompany writing for one's self are truly captured in their words. Great editing and lovely composition!

Well done!

Nicely done! Punctuating the most salient points with found footage is all at once jarring, humorous and compelling. Very thoughtfully put together--from birth to childhood to teenage crushes to the minutiae of everyday life.

Provocative and inspiring, but not in a cheezy way!

...for some reason, as I get older, the idea of journaling and documenting one's thoughts -- however fleeting -- becomes more and more intriguing. There are lots of ways to do this, and a lot of ways to approach it, as I am learning. Spear's film finds a way of visualizing and transmitting what is a very non-visual notion...I really enjoyed this, and am going to watch it again. Would love to see it on a bigger screen in higher resolution!

This is Lovely

The part that resonates the most with me is how the diary is an open question; a way to be creative, always.
